Recently we have had droughts so hay has not grown much. This year we have had plenty of rain. This means that hay and grass has had a good growing season. This in turn means that there will be plenty of feed for cows.
Maybe yesterday’s bison can eat it.
The unthreatening clouds did not bother me during my bike ride but it was cooler than sometimes at this time of year. I occasionally felt that an extra layer or two would be welcome. That’s unusual in July at this time of year.
I chose routes that kept me as far from cars as possible. I also chose wider roads. They may be safer. The challenge is to find roads where cars are banned.
We will see if the rain comes.
Streaming video from mopile devices is the future and I burned through 90 megabytes of data in just two nights of music festival. As a result of this the third night required a different approach. I used Flixwagon.
Flixwagon is in the same family as Qik and Bambuser but with many additional features. You can select the category of content, add a title and keywords to the stream before recording. The advantage of this service in contrast to the two other examples is that this one buffers the data stream in such a way that if you lose the connection you can still continue streaming once you find the data stream.
In this particular situation I added the concert access point and went to film a number of concerts like Mademosielle K and Maroon 5. In both these cases I recorded the concert and during the break from one to the other I could let the software automatically push the content to the server.As a result I saved 2CHF per megabyte and uploaded about thirty megabytes within a short amount of time.

Yesterday I was experimenting with the Static folder in Hugo. Hugo and other static site generators has a folder where you can usually put content that you don’t want to have changed. You can add php, css, js and more. By making this an option it is possible to have your blog as markdown files that are updated and published every time you make changes while other files remain intact.
I spent time converting Roman civilisation content to PHP, as well as the geography section. Now that I have invested that time in learning to use PHP in production I don’t want to lose that content by adding it as markdown pages. With PHP and HTML pages I have full creative control on how content looks and behaves.
Back in the 90s and the Zeros (2000s, but I like saying zeros), we would share photos of an event by creating a gallery and sharing that. These galleries are simple html with a page for each image, and plenty of pages to update and navigate between. These pages can be brought into the 21st century but by parking them in the static folder in Hugo we keep access to them, until we have written the json or other file type to display these photo galleries as a single page app.
There is an explanation of what Hugo does to Static files. When files and folders are added to the static folder they are added to the watch list, if Hugo is running. This means that static content will automatically be updated and available on the local instance.
When you add static files to a Hugo sight Hugo will track changes and show them via the web server but they are not added to the public folder. It is up to us, to make sure that the files that are static are updated and uploaded to the server if and when we make changes to them.
That static files are not added to the publish folder is useful. I was worried that by adding thousands of files to the static folder thousands of files would be uploaded every time I wrote a blog post and published it. This isn’t the case. I do not need to take a break from blogging with Hugo, whilst I experiment with the static part, and prepare a new folder architecture.
To avoid confusion, as I experiment I put all the static files in a sub-folder. In so doing I avoid the risk of duplicate file names or file names with the same names, but different extensions, confusing Hugo. I aim to keep it clean, until I have decided on what I want to achieve with my experimentation.
I have been struggling with Eleventy and Hugo whilst it’s easy to setup one stream of content, it is not easy to have two or more in parallel. For this reason using the Static folder allows me to keep the part that already works, separate from the part that I am still working on. It enables me to put my experiment into production sooner, and to stop going around in circles.
Today I was caught outdoors during a thunderstorm but rather than run to shelter or rush home I continued taking a timelapse video of some flowers. According to the apps we were meant to get some rain at 1800 so I expected it to be short lived.
This didn’t stop my clothes or my bag from getting wet but I was wearing hiking trousers and I wasn’t worried about the shoes. I didn’t expect anything to be soaked through and I did prepare to run home if need be. By the time I was ready to run the rain was stopping so I took out the phone and waited, and tried to capture lightning.

On the 17th of February I will stop using Google One Drive and I was looking at the smaller tiers. You have 15 gigabytes for free, 100, and 200 gigabyte options, and then 200 gigabytes. At the moment I have 200 GB on Google Drive for documents and three hundred GB for photos. All of those photos are now backed up with Immich, PhotoPrism, and possibly one or two other storage solutions.
The issue that I, and others, come accross is that there is a massive leap from storing 100GB, 200GB or 2TB. There are no 500, 750 or 1TB tiers. You go from three francs per month to 10 CHF per month. I’ve had Google One with 2TB of space and used no more than 800 GB except for a day or two when I backed up my photos to Google Drive while migrating them off Google Photos.
It turns out that Infomaniak’s Kdrive and Microsoft 365 Personal are two of the best options available. They’re priced with a 2 CHF difference. 67 CHF and 69 CHF per year. One offers Office Suite, as well as one terabyte of storage to use as you like, and the other offers two terabytes to use as you see fit. Both make it easy to backup photos from your phone to the cloud, and from the cloud to your laptop or external hard drive.
As I mentioned above Google Photos has been duplicated via PhotoPrism, Immich and to some degree kDrive so I can delete those photos without concern, in theory. Google Drive is backed up to Kdrive so in theory I can delete that dat from Google Drive safely.
My reason for moving away from Google is not based on conspiracy theories, or a moral problem with Google. It’s based on financial considerations. if they had a 500 GB or one terabyte tier then I would just downgrade my account for that tier size. This option does not exist so rather than downscale I might just jump ship.
The online backup market is huge. You have the choice between self-hosted solutions and cloud hosting solutions. Their pricing is quite similar but the question is whether you want your data to be in Europe, the US, or your own home, or the home of a friend or family member.
I was happy to use Google One, Google Drive and Google Photos for years. The reason for which I decided to leave their service is that I saw the same experience, but for cheaper from Infomaniak. It has the added benefit that the data is stored closer to where I am. It’s nice to support local providers when the option exists.
Now that I have a local backup of my photographs, rather than depending on cloud services I can shop around and switch from the current cheapest to the next most affordable. I only need to check once per year, when the current contract is about to be renewed.
