How to Audit Hugo HTML

With Hugo you can generate entire websites within milliseconds if they’re small and seconds if they’re large. Within a very short amount of time thousands of pages are generated. If you went through and checked each page then this could take hours, or even weeks, depending on the size of the site. To save time Hugo does have a command to check for html in Markdown in seconds. The next step is to see the title of the markdown pages with an issue and fix them individually.

You can run an html audit on Hugo by running the command: 

HUGO_MINIFY_TDEWOLFF_HTML_KEEPCOMMENTS=true HUGO_ENABLEMISSINGTRANSLATIONPLACEHOLDERS=true hugo && grep -inorE "<\!-- raw HTML omitted -->|ZgotmplZ|\[i18n\]|\(\)|(<nil>)|hahahugo" public/ .

It will go through your website and check that all html is working properly.

When to Use It

The best time to run an audit is when you have imported a wordpress blog to md, or from some other source to markdown. Markdown recognises some HTML but not all. I found that it is especially at comments that markdown was confused. It saw the time and date tags and detected an error. It also generates errors when it comes across html tags. If you want to display code with md you need to use back example code for the code to be ignored. \ Does not work in markdown.

How it Helps

Auditing Hugo before building helps to detect flaws that are not visible unless you check the source code for each page individually. With this simple solution you can check the entire website when you build. The first time you run it you will find errors, but over time those errors will increase. In the tutorial they say that you will run it once to check, and a second time for the official build. I ran it more often than that. The errors I got were intuitive to fix. Look for html code in markdown and you’ll find the problems. Markdown does not like smileys so if comments are converted to markdown, you need to remove the smileys.

If you’re looking for a software that makes creating panoramic shots easy with a phone such as the N95 then Panoman is an interesting option. It’s a software that you install on the phone and helps you take a series of pictures before stitching them together.

It does this by showing you a band with up to twelve possible images. As you take the first image keep the camera steady and pan to the right until the red border is filled with the next image. It automaticaly takes the picture. Repeat those steps and then press stop. Once that’s done the software stitches the images together.

On at least three occasions toots that were written as a cry for empathy, or at least venting, were interacted with by apathetic people. For this simple reason I deleted two Fediverse accounts. I deleted my Mastodon.social account, and my FireFish.social accounts. I have a precise desire, when using social media. That desire is to find a community of likeminded individuals that I have such enjoyable conversations with, that I want to meet them in person.

Noise Pollution

Noise pollution is caused by apathetic people, people that don’t consider that people want to sleep, study, think or other things. If noise pollution was not a problem libraries and other places of learning would not require quiet. They would be as noisy as everywhere else.
For daring to complain about noise pollution I was insulted, and then mocked on mastodon.social. When I look to vent, or, ideally, find empathy, and I find apathy my instant desire is to tell the person to duck off. I didn’t. I decided to write one more toot. The second response encouraged me to block the apathetic individual.

The Cult of Personality

I don’t remember what a second person wrote but it encouraged me to speak about normal people as sheeple, and to speak about the benefits of tight knit communities. One individual denounced the term sheeple and then wrote some rubbish about how not all accounts with a million followers are bad. I considered responding but didn’t. Why fight an uphill battle.

The Trigger

The trigger that got me to delete my mastodon.social and firefish.social posts was an ironic “I’m happy for you”. I am almost certain that it was ironic, although due to a lack of emoticons I do not know this for certain. What I do know is that I dumped Facebook early in the pandemic because of such interactions.

The Options

Give Up on Social Media

Sometimes I feel like giving up on asocial media. I feel like giving up on asocial media because the space is shared between generations, and use cases. Some people are utilitarian broadcasts, whose only desire is to find a mass audience. The second group are trolls looking for a misunderstanding, rather than a conversation, and the third group The third group are people, like me, who want to converse, but have to spend weeks or months finding pleasant conversations.

That’s why it’s tempting to give up on social media. It takes so much time and yet it’s so fragile. I’m thinking of returning to Facebook and Twitter because of how bad Mastodon is at the moment.

The Fediverse and Blogging

I wrote Mastodon above, because although I feel that Mastodon is a waste of time, due to how easy it is to be trolled, but very difficult to find empathy, it feels like working with WordPress and other Fediverse compatible instances is an interesting playground to play in. I love that my blog is somewhere so visible now. It is no longer stuck in a desert, it is at the front of my Fediverse streams, when i like and share my blog posts. I feel that this is the Fediverse’s unique selling point.

Revert to Facebook and Twitter

The reason for leaving Twitter and Facebook is/was to leave a toxic environment and look for a healthier community where it is fun to invest time and attention. With my experience of Mastodon, in particular, I feel that staying away makes sense, especially from big instances. The experiences we left Twitter and Facebook to avoid, are present on Mastodon.social.

Stay on Small Instances

The other, more rational option is to stay on smaller instances, and just wait until communities form. It might take months or years, but eventually they might arrive. This will take time.

Use a Nickname

Another option would be to use the web anonymously, using a nickname, like so many people do, to avoid trolls having an effect on your official persona. It’s the rational choice, but a social network where you have to hide behind an avatar is less interesting than one where people use their actual names.

And Finally

Although Mastodon and the Fediverse are growing both places are still filled with solitude. We can devote hours a day, to try to find engagement, or we can take a break, write a blog post that is shared to the Fediverse, and let it do the talking.

Andrew Keen And The Scarcity of Choice

I recently noticed that I had Andrew Keen’s The Cult of the Amateur book as an audiobook on Apple Books. I have had the book for at least a decade but have only got around to reading it recently. Over the last week I have listened to him speak about the closing of Tower Records and it encouraged me to write more about the scarcity of choice, that comes with online browsing and shopping.
When I lived in Weymouth I would go to WHSmith and look for new books, and then when I lived in London a few years later I would look for books at Waterstones. I spent hours in that book shop and often wanted to buy plenty of books but resisted temptation. The beauty of book shops is that you can look within a section and quickly see hundreds, or even thousands of books.


Scarcity of Choice With Books


Compare this to book browsing today. Book shops are rare, and supermarkets have a very limited choice. It does get worse. When you shop for books online you get plenty of the top selling books recommended, but it’s hard to find the least popular titles. It’s hard to find the long tail of books. it’s hard to browse through niche interests and topics because algorithms force us to see the top selling books, rather than browse.


Lending Libraries


That’s why the lending box in Eysins, Borex, Crassier, Founex, several in Nyon and other places are so good. They do have niche books, and they do have niche books. In the age of unlimited choice our actual options are limited to what algorithms think we want to read, rathre than what we would stumble upon in a physical book shop. Today we need to know what we’re looking for, rather than exploring, and finding it.


YouTube and Content Creators


He discussed YouTube and content creators that are creating content for free on YouTube, rather than being paid to generate it. What he didn’t explore so much, related to YouTube and amateurs trying to be professional about content production, a decade and a half later, is that broadcasters and independent companies are cutting costs and reducing their output thus reducing the number of jobs available for media professionals in mainstream media and more.


Coming of Age At the Right Time


I often wish that I had come to YouTube half a decade later than I did, maybe even later than that. When I wanted to break into the media the model was still focused on mainstream media. Now it has flipped around and the opportunity, and challenge, is to think of content that would attract people to view content. If YouTube had been what it is today, when I was 18 then I would have studied the same thing, but I would have pivoted towards independent content production much sooner. I have books on the topic, but independent at the time meant finding investors to pay for ideas. Today the barriers are inspiration and motivation.
Paradoxically, despite the barrier to entry being very low, to post content on YouTube or other video sharing platforms. there is a wall. The wall of tabloid sensationalism. I watched one content creator until I noticed the clickbait nature of the headlines. In another case I stopped watching several content creators for going on and on about their million plus subscribers. The barrier to entry is the same as the barrier to watching the content.


Getting Beyond The Noise


The patience to sort through the tabloid and sensationalist crap, before getting to content worth watching. On YouTube there is a scarcity of choice, because to please the algorithms you need to be a tabloid sensationalist to appear in search results and to be recommended. Failing this you are invisible. Failing this you need to drive traffic via blog posts or other means.


On Books And Video


I speak about the challenge of finding books despite having a backlog of hundreds of books. As I have often said, finding a book you want to read takes seconds, but actually reading it takes hours. Some books require thirty hours of reading. Usually they require seven hours or so. Books require an investment of time.
My real challenge is with video content. That’s where I struggle to find what I want to watch. In the past we would watch TV and see “What’s coming next” or we would read about new shows. Now we don’t, so we just have to browse until we find something. This isn’t a new problem. I had it when looking for films in video rental shops. In another lifetime finding something to watch was easy. Go to Discovery Channel and find documentaries to watch. Problem solved.


And Finally


As I read The Cult of the Amateur by Andrew Keen I thought that it should be updated for the 21st century. Instead of doing this he just wrote a few new books, one in 2018 and the second in 2020. I would purchase them but I might as well finish the book I am reading now, before getting yet another book. The Cult of the Amateur is an interesting look into what was perceived around 2007. The new books would reflect more modern visions.

Personal AI – Your Personal Language Model

Yesterday chatGPT was down, yet again, so I browsed through the web looking for other Large Language Models to experiment with. In the process I came across personal AI. Personal AI is an app, at the moment, that runs on your laptop, but will eventually come to mobile phones and more.


The premise is simple. You tell the AI things about you, and it then returns answers based on what you told it. You can chat with it and it will give a response based on what you tell it.


If you tell it that you have an Apple Watch and that you use it everyday it will remember this. It can be quite slow and tedious to teach it by long winded conversations.


If you want to save time you can feed it documents. I played with this. I gae it three or four letters of motivation that I wrote, as well as my CV and some comments about work I did, and with time it learns about you, and can give more specific information.


It gives a personal score to the information it receives. It’s judging how personal the information that it receives or delivers is.


The idea of this AI is to act as a personal assistant and give answers that are true to your character, without you having to reply, because it has learned about you. The more you share with it, the more concise the answers will be.


what I’d Like To See


As I played with this AI I felt that giving it information is time consuming. I could share access with Google Drive but I am not sure, how, and where it stores my data. I prefer not to take that risk.


I would love to be able to feed xml and json files to this AI. I would love to give this AI the XML file from my blog, that reflects my thoughts for decades now. I would like to be able to feed it my dive log as well, so that it can answer questions about diving.


Personal Language Models and Large Language Models


Most AI is built around Large Language Models. They ingest entire books, websites, in fact entire libraries and more. They ingest information from Reddit, Twitter and plenty of other sites. They ingest the knwowledge from plenty of sources and can give general answers about almost anything. The G in GPT is for ‘General’.


The Personal Language Model is different. It is a specialist data set that knows about you, as an individual, rather than everyone. It learns about what you like, dislike and more. It learns what you want it to know about you. It can then answer, in your place, when you decide to share it.


When reading about where the data is stored in the Privacy section I came across that it is stored in the cloud using standard level encryption via [Oasis Labs], a company based in San Francisco. I would like to be able to store that data in Europe instead.


Privacy Concerns


At this moment in time I would not train this AI with data that is not public. That’s why a dive log and a blog are fine for training, but I wouldn’t give it access to Google Docs or other sources of information. I don’t trust that a data centre in the US values my data privacy highly enough. I would prefer to have that data in Europe.


The Cost


Although Personal AI is free to play with and experiment with, it has a professional teer at 40 USD per month or 400 per year. It has limited access to ChatGPT with the free version and priority access with the pro version.


The Quantified Self and Personal AI


The project is still young but I would love to see integration with xml and json import for dive logs, blogs and fitness apps. With these three sources of information AI could learn much more about us, with less effort. It has a lot of potential. To open up that potential we need it to ingest data more efficiently.


Two Profiles by default


Personal AI starts with two profiles by default, the personal, and professional profiles. You can train two personas if you wish too. One AI silo is for your professional self. In this silo you can tell it about where and when you worked in different places and it will be seperate from the personal AI. If you want to keep other information in the personal silo, but not the professional silo you can do this too.


And Finally


In the near future our devices will constantly be learning about us, and as they do they will be able to answer certain questions instead of us. As they know more, they will be more relevant. There are concerns about privacy but we can choose whether to allow AI to access everything we do, or restrict it. I won’t trust it with IM and more but I will trust it with blog posts, CVs, motivation letters and more.


For now it’s a fun toy to play with, and learn about.
