I am still really tempted to take the train to Jaun Dorf rather than the car. There are two reasons for this. The first is that the route is easy by train. It’s two trains, and a bus. The second reason is that I don’t save any time on the way up, by taking the car. I do burn petrol, and have to pay for parking while not driving the car.
If I count just parking, and petrol, then the car is cheaper. If I count 70 centimes per kilometre then the train is cheaper. I’m really torn about whether to drive, or take the train. I am leaning towards the train, even if the return journey is an hour slower. According to a check this morning I’d be saving half an hour, if I exclude the half hour walk to and from the train station.
Driving Others
Tomorrow I could offer to drive others. For years I did drive people from A to B. Often I even picked someone up from in front of their home, as we had diving gear. The day I wasn’t there to drive that person to a dive that I wasn’t certified to do the friendship declined.
I loved to drive people but after hundreds of hikes, via ferrata, dives and more I became fatigued with driving others. You go, you pick them up. They talk with each other, and you’re just driving. If you go into, or out of Geneva, or Lausanne, or other places, it adds half an hour to an hour of driving.
Tomorrow the route from Nyon to Jaun, Dorf is two trains and a bus. That’s easy logistics.
Sunday and Annecy
With Sunday’s hike the situation is different. On Sunday it makes sense to take the car, because the journey by car takes one hour. By train, and buses it will take two and a half hours. In this situation, car sharing does make sense.
On Sunday I don’t want to commit to anything, because I want to see how tired I am at the end of Saturday’s hike. I’d rather be flexible.
And Finally
I have decided to take the train. For the outward journey it comes to the same travel time. It’s on the way back that taking the car might save me half an hour to an hour, but since I am not committed to hiking with the group on Sunday I have some freedom.
This change didn’t come from me. It came from meeting groups that took the train, rather than cars. Tomorrow, trains are convenient, so I am taking advantage. On Sunday using the car will make sense, if I go.
