If you had the chance to get up at the crack of dawn to run with a group at 6AM, have breakfast, coffee, and then head to another town for an 8AM run, would you? Hypothetically that’s what I could do on Friday morning but in practice I think that it involves too much driving. It is also exhausting.

If I was sleeping well, and I felt nice and fresh in the morning then I wouldn’t hesitate. I think it would be fun to run in Morges at 6am, and then Nyon at 8am. My concern is that it requires getting up by 04:30, which requires going to bed early, and sleeping well.

What stops me from waking at 4am to run at 6am, isn’t waking up. It’s that I would drive for an hour to run with a group for 40 minutes, be tired for the rest of the day, when I could just as easily run with the Nyon group at 8am and hypothetically not touch the car at all.

The Heat Wave as Motivation

it’s worth adding some context. We’re heading into the fourth or fifth heat wave of this summer. The longer you wait to do something, the warmer it will be. The warmer it is, especially with running, the more unpleasant it will be. By waking to run at 6am you’re waking to run at dawn, when it is fresh. By running at 8am you’re running when the sun has had two to three hours to heat the air and surfaces.

The Luxury of Things Not Being Mutually Excxlusive

Often events are planned at the same time, on the same day and in different locations so you need to choose between A and B. In this case both are easy to combine, as long as half an hour is taken to drive from Morges to Nyon, if rush hour does not get in the way.

In theory the first breakfast could be skipped to be had after the second run. How well I sleep tonight and tomorrow will make the decision for me.
