To Drive an EV or To Take the Train

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Tomorrow I have two choices. If I go by train it will require me to walk 20 minutes, and then change train three times. If I go by car it will be faster, but I will park, and then take a train to the start of the hike.

Usually I would automatically take the train in this situation. It’s quick, it’s simple, and I could spend more time with the group. In this situation I am tempted to take the car. My reason for taking the car is that it’s electric and I want to experiment with a longer drive than usual.

Normally I drive two kilometres to the shops, or fourty kilometres per journey. This time I would drive one hundred and fourty kilometres so I would be experimenting with range. When fully charged the car has a range of 210 kilometres or so, depending on gradient and driving style.

I expect to have enough range not to need to charge, but if I experiment with charging then it will help put my mind at ease for longer road journeys. I trust the car’s range estimation, but I don’t trust that I will find a charger if, and when the battery is low. That’s why this test is good. If I can charge, then that’s great, but it is not critical if I can’t.

And finally, when we no longer have to ask “Does this village have a charging station we will gain freedom. The day that an EV is as free to roam, as a car, we will see a switch from petrol and hybrid to fully electric.
