Signy Centre and Cheap Charging

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Imagine, it’s Monday morning and people are rushing to work or to the shops to get food for the week ahead. You turn up early at the shopping centre. You see that all the chargers are free so you check the price. Thirty Three centimes per kilowatt hour. You see a fantastic opportunity so you park by a charger, plug in the charging cable and start to charge.

This might trigger you to say “Who cares?” and I’d answer that thirty three centimes per kilowatt hour is a good deal. In other places it goes from thirty nine centimes to eighty centimes, if not one franc twenty per kilowatt hour.

There is also another big advantage. There is no maximum charge duration. Most places limit you to one and a half hours to two hours. If you spend ten thousand francs more, your car charges fast, but mine charges slowly, so in one and a half to two hours I might charge twenty percent. Parking for as long as I need is a splendid proposition.

Of course, it is worth noting that the parking is locked overnight so you can’t park it overnight, especially if you want to use it.

The other advantage of this charging location is that it is in a rural setting from which you can run, walk and more. If you use the ABC principle (Always be Charging) then you can top up the car to 80 percent as you run, or shop. You could even get a haircut, go to the gym and more.

I am bringing this specific charger up because in the past, you would pay 2 CHF as a connection fee, and then fourty five centimes per kilowatt hour, so it made sense to deplete your battery to twenty percent and then charge to full, or at least to eighty percent as the last twenty percent are the most expensive.

Now that the connection fee is gone, you pay for the kilowatt/hours you use rather than the connection fee. Now that they have modernised the pricing plan it is tempting to charge here more often. It is now the best local deal for EV charging.
