On having a dedicated machine used for nothing but video editing.

My editing machine has a minimum of things installed on it. Final Cut Pro and related software, nothing else. The point is that when I am editing I am dedicated to that single task. I take breaks when it is rendering or when I need time to digest the edit so far. When I was editing over a decade ago I would mark 10 in and out points and then go and drink some ice tea while the machine assembled the footage. Later when I moved to desktop editing I would let the computer render and take a break. Today with the current system taking breaks is based on scene completion. That’s how a friend and I worked on our fiction film over a period of weeks. Right now the rough cut is ready. We need to add music, improve the sound, colour correct and more but at least a big step was taken. Post inspiration.

Behind the Scenes: Record

Behind the Scenes: Record from The Lincoln Motor Company on Vimeo.

I love the idea of putting a small camera on an object and filming event from that perspective. The idea of putting a gopro on a record is an interesting one. With the size of technology today you’d expect this to be simple to do. I was disappointed to see that what they did for this video clip was to build a camera rig for a Red Epic and get the camera to spin. The second fallacy is the amount of time for which the record is speeding at “normal speed”. The image is blurred for too long before it goes to slow motion images. By that time I pressed pause and looked at the making of. As a person who loves the documentary genre and cinema verité this manufactured reality feels like a cheap lie rather than innovative experimentation.

Martyn Ashton - Road Bike Party

A Film by Robin Kitchin Produced by Ashton Bikes These bikes are used to cycle over three thousand kilometres during the Tour de France and here it’s being used for what mountain bikes are usually used for. At least it’s a light bike. To see the out-takes.

Waves and lighthouses.

Waves crashing against lighthouses can be impressive and I remember seeing an interview with a lighthouse from the series of images below. The idea of seeing the individual who is photographed and hearing things from his perspective are interesting. When I find that video I will link to it.

Cat in a shark costume on a Roomba vacuum cleaner

Shark week is here and along with it so the opportunity for shark videos to appear arrives. In one case a cat apparently likes traveling around rooms on a roomba while wearing a shark costume. Why a cat would wear a shark costume is one question. The second is how you get the costume on the cat. It’s a cat after all. They’re known for their personality after all.   And if that wasn’t enough look at this chick and how he behaves.

New video features

I will be experimenting with the new video tools for the current version of wordpress so you can expect more original content in the near future. I will specify which system I am using.
