Cool Evenings and Air Conditioning

There is the idea that the way to fight against heat is to add air conditioning to every single building. This would be true, if we were in Dubai and the temperature never went below 20°c at night, but in Europe it very often does. This means that a mosquito net is more interesting than air conditioning, and far cheaper.

Air conditioning is great when you deal with heat for weeks or months, without the opportunity to get rid of that heat at night. In Europe, nights are usually cool enough to lower the temperature inside buildings. As I write this I have the balcony door opened fully, trying to vent residual heat from this Minergie building.

A Spontaneous Ride to Mont Tendre Following the Wrong Route

Yesterday I hesitated to wake up to go for the Coffee and Croissant loop. I decided to go anyway. This ride was at a relaxed pace. It’s amusing. When I left home I could see a beautiful sunrise, with nice light, and clear skies. By the time we started the ride mist had come up and we were riding through humid clouds. It was so wet I saw drops of water falling from my glasses as they condensed during the ride.

The Beauty of Flowing Air

People think that to be comfortable on a hot day you need to rush to an air conditioned room or building but that idea is wrong. When I worked on one building, for three years, I called it “air conditioned hell” for a simple reason. For the body to cool it needs air flow to help evaporate water. When there is no air flow it feels stuffy, and we interpret this as being too hot.

Threads Thoughts

For several days I have replaced Facebook with Threads and the experience has been good. I have found that the community, so far, is ordinary, rather than geeky, and friendly rather than trolling or flamey.

I have been posting and commenting for a few days now and although four or five comments got me to block individuals the rest of interactions have been good. I feel I should elaborate about blocking. I block if someone is negative, without giving a valid response, if someone is negative and I am likely to be negative back, or if I feel that a defensive response could begin a flame or troll war.
