Experiment

Waking early is great, to run when it is cooler but it does have a serious drawback. That drawback is that whilst the run might be more pleasant, due to the fresher air, especially evening and morning rain but it has the drawback that if you live in a minergie apartment you never get an opportunity to flush out warm air and replace it with cool air.

Today, as one of my suntan lotion bottles is empty of suntan lotion I decided to clean it with dish soap and water, before adding water to use the suntan lotion bottle as a mister, and so far it has been a partial success.

This morning I woke at 4 to have a shower, have breakfast, and then drive to Morges for a 6am run. As a result I had no opportunity to open windows, aerate or anything else. I kept every room closed so each room is a compartment.

The result, is that the temperature in my flat has been completely flat, varrying by .01 of a degree throughout the day, rather than huge fluctuations.

Tomorrow I have the opportunity to do another range test with the Fiat 500. I know that if I drive at 120 kilometres per hour the range is about 100 km but if I slow down to 100 kilometres per hour then the range is theoretically doubled. The drive I want to do is about 100 kilometres so if my optimism is well placed then I should make it there and back.

If you wanted an iPhone with a terabyte of storage it would cost you 1549 CHF for the iPhone 16 Pro. With the Fairphone 4 128 GB model you would pay 329 CHF for the phone and 101 to 109 CHF for a 1TB card. That’s about 440 CHF and you’d have an absurd amount of storage. Absurd because you never want to lose a device with that much data on an SD card.

For months I have been hosting Immich, Photoprism and AudioBookShelf and the experiment has been a success. It has been stable and reliable so far and I did not detect anyone accessing my server without permission.

I had these services as Exposed Host via the Swisscom router DMZ setting. it was easy to setup and run with no issues for the duration of the experiment. I closed the DMZ because no one but me was accessing these services after five to six months but me. Keeping services exposed for, me, alone, to use them, is not necessary.

For those that are wondering whether you can use a Raspberry Pi 5 with four gigabytes of RAM as a desktop replacement the answer is “not really”. I know I should have said this at the end but I prefer to tell people immediately.

The OS

For this experiment I am running Raspberry Pi OS, the version released: 2024-03-15. I have no doubt that Raspberry Pi OS Lite and Ubuntu Server would be fine. I should run this experiment again with Ubuntu Desktop 24.04 LTS at a later date to see if there is a discernible difference.

When I got the electric scooter I was curious about whether it could be used when looking after children while they ride their bikes and the answer is “yes”. You can stop reading now.

Yesterday I was near the Lac de Divonne and since the children wanted to race it was a good opportunity to see whether I was faster than them on their bikes.

Due to the electric scooter being limited to 20 kilometres per hour I thought that it might be too slow. In fact it’s too fast, so you can modulate looking after children while riding an electric scooter. They can ride to their limit and you can ride beside them, without having to run to keep up.
