Waiting for Cyclone Erin and Rain

Page content

On RTS Info they warn about Erin, the ex-cyclone probably hitting Switzerland, dumping a lot of rain. The alert for some areas is level 5.

This is for a narrow band in the Alps on the Italo-Swiss border. The possible impacts are ’extreme rise in water of rivers and lakes, flooding in many areas, and landslides. Rail and road traffic could be impacted.

Around Nyon there is a chance of localised flooding, dry ditches filling with water, and in some places localised flooding in basements and other places.

Last night it rained, but that was good, because it meant that this morning it was dry for our bike ride. The roads were still well so every so often we did get wet tyres and I was more cautious when descending than I might have been with dry roads.

In theory the rain should arrive for a few minutes around 2000-2100 and again around 2am. We’ll see if it wakes me. We will see how severe the conditions are and whether tomorrow’s bike rides are cancelled.

The Geneva group I ride with are not planning a ride for tomorrow evening, and a Nyon group I ride with is expecting to cancel.

Good News for Dry Rivers

The rivers that I saw around Orbe will be filling up tonight, and will flow for at least a few hours, if not days. This is good news for the trees and aquatic life. Rivers will come back to the surface. It will also refill hydroelectric dams and other forms of water storage.

And Finally

Although it is absurd I am looking forward to the rain. I look forward to the rain because it will cool the building structure that I live in. I hope that there will be enough of a cooling effect on the roof to get down to 26°c. I am tired of living at 27-28°c.

Since Minergie is designed as a heat trap in winter, it becomes uncomfortable in summer. I checked, and the temperature is currently 28.3°c.

As I live under the roof I love the sound of rain, especially when I am sleeping. It’s relaxing and pleasant.
