My goal isn’t to be fast. My goal is to run 17km without getting exhausted, and without suffering too much.

Two or three weeks ago I ran a social 18km or so and I felt fine at the start but as people picked up the pace, and I started to get fatigued, especially when it flattened out I started to suffer with the pace.

By the end I was too tired to run so I had to walk. I was pushed too hard. The thing is, social runs tend to speed up, and allow for a gap to form between the faster people and the slower people. The same is true of hiking and cycling. The result is that you run at an unsustainable pace and fatigue before the end of the run.

Months ago I ran 21.1km so I managed a semi-marathon distance, on barefoot shoes. I will never do that again because of the risk of injury. The point is, I can run the distance. It’s all about pacing, and comfort. I want to run the distance, and have something left for the next day.

Last Saturday as part of the training I did too social runs but there was a miscalculation on my part. I had expected the 5km social run to be slow and relaxed, but because we were just six I got three PRs along the route, so it tired me.

I saw that there was a communal party in the centre of the village, so instead of driving to Nyon I ran four kilometres, and then I ran 7 kilometres and I felt fatigued so the second run was an endurance challenge. I made it to the end but I was tired. I walked home, but at a slower pace than I might otherwise have done.

I think I had Sunday to recover and Monday afternoon we did interval trainings on a hill to practice for the Morat hills. Two things stood out. I had the endurance to repeat that effort, and speed up on the last run. It was 8 times 30 seconds of climbing twice with three minutes of recovery. I went from zone three, back to zone 1 within the time it took to walk back to the start.

And finally this is an A to B run from Morat to Fribourg along a route I have not walked or cycled yet. The experience should be positive. I am doing this for the experience, not the race. I have no desire to race, at this point. My goal is to finish without feeling exhausted, or pain. The goal is realistic.

Reading Time: 2 minutesOn Sunday I will be running 17km in a running event.
